Romania moving closer to accession25 October 2005
Romania is on track to join the EU in January 2007, says the Commission's 2005 monitoring report. However, accession in 2007 remains conditional on further urgent progress in reforms.
Romania was the first Central and Eastern European country to have established official relations with the European Community. Bucharest has had diplomatic ties with the EU since 1990. In 1995, a bilateral Europe Agreement entered into force.
On 22 June 1995, Romania submitted its formal application for EU membership. The official accession negotiations were launched on 15 February 2000.
The Copenhagen summit of 2002 set 2007 as the target date for Romania's EU accession. Accession negotiations were concluded in December 2004 and the Treaty of Accession was signed in April 2005.
